A Hypernova is a type of supernova explosion with an energy substantially higher than standard supernovae. Such explosions are believed to be the origin of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. [Directly quoted from Wikipedia]
And do you mean VY Canis Majoris? Scientists do believe that star has the possibility of going hypernova... its a kind of wait and see thing.  Hypernova of VY Canis Majoris?

A hypernova will beat a supernova since its a bigger explosion that could probably wipe out a galaxy
